Dear Friends,
Greece will be celebrating the Resurrection of Jesus Christ April
27th. In the next couple of weeks people will say, Χριστός Ανέστη!
Christ is Risen! And the other person will respond, Αληθώς Ανέστη!
Indeed He is Risen! But do they believe it, or is it just tradition?
The biggest traditional and religious event for this season is the
Miracle of the Holy Light. This great “miracle” takes place every
year at noon, on Holy Saturday in the Church of the Sepulcher in
Jerusalem. After a whole hour of detailed inspection and the
ceremony of sealing the tomb, the Greek Orthodox Patriarch with his
escort enters the Church, then the Patriarch strips from his
pontifical garb and enters with his priestly white tunic and an
unlit torch, which is inspected by the Jerusalem police. The
Patriarch prays that God will send the Holy Light, while the
pilgrims chant “Κύριε Ελέισον,” God have mercy on us, suddenly 33
torches in the Holy Sepulcher miraculously light up and the torch
the Patriarch holds also lights up by this Holy Light. This light is
said to be given off by the power of the resurrection, every year
since Jesus rose from the grave. This Holy Light is then shipped by
plane, ship, and car to all the capitals of countries with Orthodox
Churches across the world. By midnight of Saturday, people gather by
their local churches to receive the Holy Light and pass it down to
the next person until the whole village or city has a light. I have
seen people carry their light home, to place it in an oil lamp in
the corner of their home, where it will shine by their favorite
icon. My heart aches for them, for though they may have this so
called Holy Light, they remain in darkness and don’t know the source
of the true Light of the World, Jesus Christ, John 8:12.
This
next couple of months we have several groups that will be coming to
help us evangelize Greece by passing out tracts. Please pray that
these tracts will fall in the hands of people whose hearts are ready
to receive the message and be saved. Pray for our safety as we will
be going from city to city to evangelize.
Laboring Together Till Jesus Comes,
