July 2004

Dear Friends,

The countdown to the Olympics is narrowing down. We had our team leaders come to make the final arrangements and everything is ready to go. Tracts and Scriptures are on their way to Athens, 110 people have jumped on board the Global Outreach team, and in no time we will be reaching the peoples of the world in this ancient city of Athens, where the Olympic Games began in 1896.

To kick off this event, the National Soccer Greek team won the Euro 2004 cup, which brought the spirits high in readiness to take the gold this year. There was never such exhibition of patriotism and unification of the Greek people for a national team before and neither was there ever before such apathy displayed for religion and its leader. Over one million people flooded the Olympic Stadium and the streets to welcome the team, to “deify” the winners and they so proudly announced. They were there waiting for hours full of excitement and anticipation to receive their heroes. However, to their surprise, the Greek Orthodox Archbishop made its appearance and gave his welcome speech, and the people were deflated, because they felt oppressed by the religious figure and were not able to express their victory with their profanity and vulgar song and shouts of victory. The media could not explain the attitude of the people and the way their spirit was deflated. This is hard for me to convey in such a short letter, but in two words, it describes the spiritual condition of the Greek people: spiritual apathy. Please pray for this nation, that they will look to God, the true and living God, Jesus Christ for their salvation.

Last year we sent you a letter endorsing a young man to come to Greece. After much prayer and consideration, the Lord led him to come to Greece and work with me for one year instead of just the 10 days the team will be here. James Sinde, who graduated from Kerwin Christian High School, NC, surrendered to come to Greece and help me with the preparation for the Olympics and the follow up thereafter. The Lord provided the money for his airline ticket, and he came by faith, trusting that the Lord will provide for his stay here. We are making provision for him at this time, however we would ask you that if the Lord leads you, to please help us financially to host this young man. I have taken him under my wing, training him and teaching him the ropes of evangelism. He finished the first session of language school, and he is daily with me on the streets of Athens. He had an encounter already downtown with an angry Greek man as he gave him a tract, but James handled himself very well. Pray for James, that God will sustain him, provide for him, and lead him in His paths as he prays for God’s burden for this people and direction for his life. Continue to pray for the Olympics outreach.
